Below are some common problems and solutions that you could take care of. If you are having trouble, please call us for an appointment.

  • Loose band, bracket or brace
  • Loose wire
  • Poking wire
  • Lost tiewire or elastic tie
  • Soreness
  • Headgear does not fit appliance

Loose band, bracket or brace

Problem: Loose band, bracket or brace
Solution: If band or bracket is still attached to wire, leave in place. If it is uncomfortable, place wax on it. If it comes out completely, save it, place in an envelope and bring to office.

Loose wire

Problem: Loose wire
Solution: Try to place wire back in place with tweezers. If this is not possible, clip more with fingernail clippers behind last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If any discomfort, place wax on it.

Poking Wire

Problem: Poking wire
Solution: Try to push sticking wire down with a spoon or pencil eraser.  If this is not possible, place wax on it.

Lost tiewire or elastic tie

Problem: Lost tiewire or elastic tie
Solution: Notify us at next appointment.

Soreness

Problem: Soreness -- The soreness from a wire change or "tightening" will usually last 24-48 hours. Over-the-counter pain medications may help.
Solution: Use warm salt-water rinses and/or Tylenol.

Headgear does not fit appliance

Problem: Headgear does not fit appliance.
Solution: This is sometimes caused by not wearing as prescribed. If facebow is bent, call office at once. If appliance is sticking or poking, place wax on it.
